Summary

Description
English: Vatnajökull National Park is a national park in Iceland, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2019. It encompasses all of the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest European glacier outside the arctic circle. Under the glacier, eight volcanoes are present among which Bárðarbunga is the largest and Grímsvötn the most active. One of the features that make the park unique are the black streaks visible along the slopes of the glaciers: they are caused by layers of ash deposited on the glacier during the previous eruptions of Icelandic volcanoes. This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 26 August 2020, shows a very rare completely cloudless view of the Vatnajökull National Park. Thanks to the very high acquisition frequency, the data derived from Sentinel-2 are the basis of the most recent studies on glaciers and volcano monitoring.
