Summary

Description A basket of snap melons (Cucumis melo subspecies agrestis, cultivar group Momordica) in Pemba town, northern Mozambique. Snap melons are mealy, with an insipid taste. Fruit pulp has to be cut up in small pieces and mixed with some sugar. Lemon or milk powder can also be added to the mix. After this process the fruit salad becomes juicy, aromatic and very tasty. Fruit pieces of snap melon can also be mixed with other fruits. At maturity the fruit cracks open spontaneously. A variable landrace, as can be seen from the different colours and patterns of the fruit surface. It is the only existing cultivar group of melon in northern Mozambique.
