Summary

Description Venn diagram of different possible sexual orientations (homosexuality, heterosexuality, bisexuality, gynephilia and androphilia), expressed as differing selections of the four basic possible combinations of gender-that-you-are and gender-that-you-are-attracted-to. I know the terms "gynephilia" and "androphilia" are not particularly common (although their meaning is obvious to anyone who knows a few Greek roots), but I think it is interesting that we prefer the distinction homosexual/heterosexual instead. In fact, by preferring that distinction we are in effect saying that the correlation between gender-that-you-are and gender-that-you-are attracted to is more important than gender-that-you-are-attracted-to byself; we are also implying that a straight man has more in common with a straight woman than a gay man (same gender-that-you-are) or a lesbian (same gender-that-you-are-attracted-to), and that a straight woman has more in common with a straight man than with a lesbian (same gender-that-you-are) or a gay man (same gender-that-you-are-attracted-to.)
