The present copyright laws of Singapore, as outline in Section 212 states that copyright in a photograph shall subsist for 70 years from the time it is taken [http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/non_version/cgi-bin/cgi_getdata.pl?actno=2006-REVED-63&doctitle=COPYRIGHT%20ACT%0A&date=latest&method=part&segid=1138345608-006937 PART XI

TRANSITIONAL Division 1 — Preliminary]; also see Section 28: PART III: COPYRIGHT IN ORIGINAL LITERARY, DRAMATIC, MUSICAL AND ARTISTIC WORKS Division 1 — Nature, Duration and Ownership of Copyright in Works. However, further provisions is stated that the present copyright laws of Singapore are only applicable to photographs taken after 10 April 1987. Photographs taken before this date still follows the Crown Copyright Law of 1911, which states that the copyright in a photograph shall subsist for 50 years from the time that it is taken. (Refer to Copyright Guidelines For Newsletter Editors in Singapore, 7 May 1999, Christopher Pang). Singapore was a Crown Colony, which was part of the Commonwealth of the British Empire in 1900, with Limited Self-Government. Hence photographs taken in the 1900 in Singapore comes under the jurisdiction of British copyright laws and are now in the public domain.
