DescriptionRhaphithamnus spinosus fruit at Logan.jpg
English: Glossy, attractive, bluish-purple fruits of Rhaphithamnus spinosus (Juss.)Moldenke, family Verbenaceae, borne by one of several specimens of this spiny shrub (native to Chile and Argentina) grown at Logan Botanic Garden, near Stranraer, Scotland.
This specimen growing in the area at Logan dedicated to Chilean plants. In a different area at Logan is to be found the Champion Tree (largest specimen currently growing in the U.K.) of this somewhat frost-tender shrub. The fruits of R. spinosus are used by the Machi (shamanesses / shamans) of the Huilliche people of the Los Lagos Region of southern Chile as an antidote to their highly toxic hallucinogen Latua pubiflora (Griseb.)Baillon (Solanaceae).
