Summary

Description
English: The United States Navy established a battery at the Navy Yard, Washington D.C., for training young crew in gunnery. This sketch is by an unknown artist employed by Frank Leslie's Illustrated, 1861. Guns depicted are (left to right) Cochran's breech loading gun, an 11" smoothbore Dahlgren gun, and a Dahlgren rifled gun. Illustration reproduced by Naval History and Heritage Command, NH 59241.
