Elisa Bravo Jaramillo iba en el bergantín el Joven Daniel, que había zarpado de Valparaíso el 23 de julio rumbo a Valdivia y que naufragó a la altura de la desembocadura del río Toltén, en la playa de Puancho, costa de Cautín, zona del lago Budi. Sucedió en la noche del 31 de julio al 1 de agosto de 1849; culparon a los mapuches de haber raptado a Elisa, que habría sobrevivido al naugragio y pasado a ser mujer del cacique Kurín o Curín. La leyenda dice que los supervivientes levantaron un campamento en la playa, pero que pronto fueron matados por los indios. Según algunos historiadores modernos, como Sergio Villalobos, Premio Nacional de Historia (Chile), en realidad, no hay pruebas de que hubiera supervivientes ni de que Elisa no hubiera perecido y estuviera efectivamente cautiva en la Araucanía (véase Vida fronteriza en la Araucanía; el fragmento sobre el naufragio puede consultarse en Google Books.
