Summary

1400 - 1425 (From an early 15th century English manuscript, The British Library)

The woman is blood-letting by making cuts or `scarifications' with a special pointed instrument. She has already placed heated vessels over earlier cuts: these create a vacuum which allows the blood to be drawn off in measured amounts. The heated vessels look like small balls in the picture.

The woman is dressed in the flot height of the contemporary fashion. Women practised all branches of medicine during the Middle Ages.
