Description
English: Lower Van Norman Reservoir Dam, Feb 10, 1971 — after the 1971 San Fernando earthquake in Los Angeles County, California.
  • Oblique aerial view looking east, over the northern San Fernando Valley.
  • Seismic shaking caused failure of dam: 1.) concrete dam facing and service road have slid with a portion of dam into the reservoir; 2.) there is an extensive fracturing on remaining front of earth-fill dam; 3.) previous water level can be seen on concrete facing; 4.) considerable water had been emptied by the time of the photo, however a second intake has toppled and is submerged.
