Description
English: The Japan Meteorological Agency’s GMS-5 satellite captured this visible imagery at 07:00 Coordinated Universal Time on October 17, 1997, featuring Typhoon Joan at peak intensity. At the time, Joan had 1-minute sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h), and the Japanese Meteorological Agency estimated Joan's minimum central pressure at 915 millibars. Joan was 1,896 kilometers from land.
