THE harbor of Cherbourg is bounded on the east by Point Fer-manville, and on the west by Cape de la Hague. Seen from thesea, the country of La Hague looks desolate and forbidding. Highgranite cliffs surround it on all sides. Masses of black rock, thrownup in the volcanic age, stand out from the water in all sorts of strangeand jagged shapes. The shores, covered with sharp points andneedles which might be iron or steel, give it the look of an uninhab-itable land. But when you reach the heights, the aspect changes andbecomes bright; plowed fields, pastures of sheep and cows, woodsand houses, show that the country is fertile and kindly.
