Description

Twinette air-conditioned sleeper car "Yankai" (an Australian Aborigial word meaning "walkabout") in an Indian Pacific consist. It was originally built in 1967 by the South Australian Railways for The Overland train between Adelaide and Melbourne. Twinette compartments, of which there were 10 in this car, had seating for 3 people during the day and accommodated one person each in an upper bunk and lower bunk at night; a private shower and toilet was included.

Yankai entered service in December 1967. Under Australian National ownership in 1988, it was recoded to JTB2. It was transferred to standard gauge in 1996 and sold to Great Southern Railway in 1997. By 1999 it was refurbished and repainted grey with no lettering applied, as in this photograph. By March 1999 a new logo was applied to both sides of the car.
