Summary

Description

Gravestone memorials to relatives of Leeds sculptor Robert Mawer (1807–1854), in the church yard of All Saints Church, Ripley, North Yorkshire, England.

The inscription on the right hand gravestone says: "Here lieth the body of William Mawer, of Shaw Mills, who departed this life August 20th 1844 aged 78 years. Also of William Mawer, son of the above, who died March 20th 1853 aged 58. Also Mary Mawer, wife of the first and mother of the last named who died May 30th 1861 aged 100 years."
(Notes: The elder William Mawer was the son of Thomas Mawer of Haden Carr, and was baptised at Middlesmoor 13 March 1766. William the younger, son of William and Mary mentioned above, was baptised in 1796 at Middlesmoor. Re Mary: in the 1851 and 1861 census her birthplace is recorded as Nidderdale or Kirkby Malzeard, both of which included Middlesmoor - the possible precise location of her birth.)

The inscription on the left hand gravestone says: "To the memory of Mary Beecroft, wife of Thomas Beecroft, Whipley-Moor, who died August the 22nd 1831 aged 30 years. A loving wife, a friend most dear, a tender mother lieth here. Also Robert Mawer, nephew to the above, who died November 22nd 1832 aged 10 years. Dear friends weep not for me, for I died in my infancy."
(Notes: According to Ripley parish register, Robert (d.1832) was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Mawer, and was baptised at Ripley in 1822. His aunt Mary Beecroft nee Mawer was baptised in Middlesmoor on 2 January 1801. Mary Beecroft was the daughter of William Mawer the elder and his wife Mary, and sister of William the younger, on the other gravestone which is transcribed above.)
