Summary

Description The Elgin Academy (1856). The charter for the school was issued in 1839, four years after Elgin was founded. However, the fledgling city was initially unable to finance it. The main school building was built in 1856, though the first diploma wasn't awarded until 1872--it was presented to the granddaughter of Elgin's founder. By the mid 1870s, 274 students were enrolled. Classes were held in the building until 1969, when the fire marshall deemed the building unsafe for use. In the 1970s, the academy sold the Old Main building to the city of Elgin for $1 and it was converted into a museum. The academy today is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
