Summary

Cumulus mediocris ('mediocris' is Latin for 'moderate') indicate unstable conditions in the lower atmosphere. If the instability persists into the middle and upper layers of the atmosphere, these can develop into thunderstorms. The more tower-like the clouds, and the faster it grows, the more likely it is to form into cumulus congestus or cumulonimbus.
