Olapeju Ibekwe is a Nigerian social entrepreneur and corporate executive, serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Sterling One Foundation. Under her leadership, the foundation focuses on five key areas: healthcare, education, gender equality, climate action, and food security.[1]

Early Life and Education

Olapeju Ibekwe was born in Nigeria, where she grew up in a military family. Her father was a colonel in the Nigerian Army, and her mother was a teacher. Due to her father’s military career, she lived in various parts of Nigeria and became familiar with different cultures and languages, including Yoruba, Hausa, and Ibo. Ibekwe attended Command Secondary School and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos. She also holds a Master’s degree in Public and International Affairs from the same university.[2]

Career

Early Career in Journalism

In 2003, Olapeju Ibekwe began her career in journalism at Galaxy Television. Her work in the media helped develop her communication and storytelling skills, which would become foundational in her later corporate and social impact roles.[3]

Career at Sterling Bank Plc

Olapeju Ibekwe joined Sterling Bank Plc in 2004, where she held several roles over 15 years, working in customer service, branch operations, and business strategy.[4]

She also served in strategic roles, including Strategy Officer, Business Intelligence Manager, and CSR Events and Sponsorships Manager. Her work in branding and corporate communications led her to become Head of Branding and, later, Marketing Manager for Corporate and Investment Banking at the bank.[5]

CEO of The Sterling One Foundation

In 2019, Olapeju Ibekwe became the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the The Sterling One Foundation, a nonprofit organization focusing on five key pillars: healthcare, education, gender empowerment, climate action, and food security. Under her leadership, the foundation has launched various projects, including the Beach Adoption Project for cleaning coastal communities and a nationwide tree-planting initiative in partnership with organizations like the Nigerian Conservation Foundation.[6]

Africa Social Impact Summit (ASIS)

Olapeju Ibekwe leads the Africa Social Impact Summit (ASIS), which brings together development professionals, business leaders, and policymakers to tackle social and economic challenges in Africa. The summit has attracted over 8,000 participants from 60 countries, highlighting its growing influence in the development sector.[7]

Filmmaking and Advocacy

In addition to her work in social development, Ibekwe is a producer of the feature film Chatroom, which addresses issues of gender-based violence and serves as a platform for survivors to share their stories. The film has been showcased at exclusive screenings and is part of her broader effort to use storytelling to raise awareness about social issues.[8]

Public Speaking and Advocacy

Olapeju Ibekwe is a frequent speaker across Africa, addressing issues such as sustainable development, healthcare, and gender empowerment. She has spoken at events like GITEX Africa in Morocco, where she discussed health financing, and the ADEA Triennale on Education in Mauritius, where she advocated for educational reforms.[9] In Nigeria, she has participated in the Women in Development (WiD) Summit and the Nigerian International Film Summit.[10]

Awards and Recognition

In December 2022, Ibekwe received the Leadership Impact Award in Nonprofit Management at the CSR Reporters Philanthropic Awards for her work in social impact and sustainability.[14] In 2023, she was named one of Ventures Africa's 20 Women of Impact, acknowledging her leadership in driving social change across Africa.[15]
